This book comes to me at the recommendation of my dearest friend and colleague Eric Johnson. My reflections so far: This book traffics in the great question of human happiness or human flourishing.

Along with the massive Christian tradition including Augustine and Aquinas and everyone in between, the question of happiness and how to attain it truly is the great driving question of ethics and theology.

The answer for the Christian being found in the Triune God. I have read enough on this now and have now turned the corner to see its centrality that I am shocked that I lived the last 25 years as a Christian, including much of that in the seminary environment, and yet did not formerly understand this!

This fundamental desire for happiness can only be satisfied through contemplation as a way of being in the world. But we have no power over it because we ourselves are this gravitational impulse [by nature]. This is in contradiction to the Stoic view, he argues, as noble and admirable as it is.

Pieper also points out that to say people seek happiness by nature implies that by nature we do not already possess it.
